Core: Language Arts/Social Studies


7th grade Core: 

This course is a blend of English Language Arts in conjunction with Social Studies in a two period block. Students will work towards mastery of seventh grade Common Core English Language Arts content standards as they interact with a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is differentiated for the particular needs and challenges of all students. A variety of literary works from various genres, including informational texts, non-fiction, essays, short stories, poetry, and novels will be studied. Along with reading, students will complete a variety of writing assignments including multi-paragraph essays, personal responses, journal entries, and poetry. Study of grammatical concepts and proper usage is taught in the context of the writing process. Technology is utilized throughout the curriculum via multimedia presentations, typed essays, online assignments, research and assessments. Student research and reports will include 7th grade social studies standards, the social, political, economic, cultural, and religious changes that occurred throughout the world during the period between 27 B.C.E. and 1789 C.E.. After learning about the ancient world, students will study the history and geography of the great civilizations of Europe, The Middle East, China, Japan, Africa, as well as the American empires of the Maya, Aztec and Inca. Students will develop basic geographic literacy, with an emphasis on understanding cause and effect relationships, trends, and repetitive themes in history. In addition to studying, students will experience hands-on learning as they engage in simulation activities, debate, role-play, and work cooperatively.

8th grade Core:

Students will work towards mastery of 8th grade Common Core English Language Arts content standards as they interact with a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is differentiated for the particular needs and challenges of all students. A variety of literary works from various genres, including informational texts, non-fiction, essays, short stories, poetry, and novels will be studied. Along with reading, students will complete a variety of writing assignments including multi-paragraph essays, personal responses, journal entries, and poetry. Student research and reports will include 8th grade social studies standards, which follows the development of the United States political system by tracing the growth of its governmental institutions, historical problems, conflicts, and current issues. Student will begin with an overview of American history from the arrival of the first Americans to the end of the Revolutionary War, including an in depth study of the American Constitution, Manifest Destiny, Slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the rise of Industrialism, and Progressivism. Students will develop basic geographic literacy, with an emphasis on understanding cause and effect relationships, trends, and repetitive themes in history. In addition to studying, students will experience hands-on learning as they engage in simulation activities, debate, role-play, and work cooperatively. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on the contributions of many minority groups, which make up the American people.
